Oops We Did It Again!!
Today we were informed by The European Driving Association that our new Ideal EuroTech synthetic harnesses have been selected as “Best Choice” for those drivers who prefer a synthetic harness.
“Best Choice” for several reasons:
- 1. Perfect fit because of different available sizes [from mini to draft] and adjustability per size
- 2. Most durable [expected lifetime 20 – 25 years]
- 3. Stays supple and good under extreme weather conditions (very warm and/or very cold)
- 4. Best buy [a complete harness starts at $ 788.00 (for a single mini)]
- 5. Best design [latest safety innovations included!] also because the same harness can be used for singles, pairs, teams, tandems, etc.
Of course we are extremely proud with this recognition and prestigious award. But we are already busy again with our new innovations. New bits with rubber mouthpieces and also bits with cherry rollers. And have a look at the prices for these bits because we keep proving that quality and low prices do go together!

Broken? Erik will repair it!
Send us your repair-work (no matter the brand of your harness) and Erik will fix it! Of course it is important to do some regular maintenance to your harness to keep it in good shape and avoid problems when you want to start driving!
In order to help you out, here are some tips that you should consider in order to check your harness before you actually start using it:
- Is the stitching still okay
- Is the leather not dried out, worn out or torn [as the leather should be supple and smooth]
- Are all buckles and other steel parts still okay
- Are trace-holes and other holes not torn
- Are your reins still okay (pay special attention to the bit straps!)
Erik will redo stitching, make and replace leather and steel parts, dye if necessary, shorten traces and other straps if necessary. In addition special and detailed work such as bell harnesses for your sleigh rides, show parts for
your harness, or special adjustments are always tasks that Erik is willing to take on!
We also carry a complete line of leather care products from Rapide: leather soap, oil and grease which all comes in black, brown or neutral.

From Edwin’s driving seat!

No matter if you drive for pleasure, competition or if it is your profession: safety issues should always have your attention. I have seen quite some horse accidents in my career (I also had a few myself!) and most of these were
caused because the driver got out of control.
The standard Liverpool bit is, all over the world, still the most common bit for driving. I also use the Liverpool bit for most of our horses: with fixed cheek for driving pairs or multiples and with a swivel cheek for driving
singles. Of course the shanks are part of the Liverpool bit. And ‘no shanks – no bit’ so we do need these shanks. But… the shanks of the Liverpool bit are also a risk. Your horse might get stuck with one of the shanks of the bit
when your horse rubs his/her head against things. This risk might be a little bit less for singles then for pairs and multiples. But believe me: I’ve seen quite some drivers getting out of control when one of their horses rubbed his
head against the head of the other horse and when one of the shanks of the bit got stuck into the bridle of the other horse (pairs/multiples). Especially for pairs, the use of a Buxton bit is not the solution! With a Buxton bit your
horse can get stuck under the pole with the bar and if this happens and if your horse pulls back then your horse could even break his/her cheek!
So, we have a better solution: just a piece of garden or fuel hose!
Depending on the size of the bit you are using take a piece of approximately 10” of garden hose or fuel hose and which just does NOT fit over the shanks of the bit. Now, put it for a few minutes in boiling water, and then slide it
over the ends of the shafts (it should be tight!). And now your Liverpool bit is safe and ready to use: your horse will not get stuck anymore in e.g. the bridle of another horse and if your horse gets stuck behind something solid
(the pole, the shafts, etc.) then he/she will pull off the piece of hose instead of wrecking his cheek or something else!
Costs? 50 cents per bit can save you a fortune!
Have a safe and happy next drive!
